Here's a good way to test reading comprehension.
Let's see how many people run stories today in which they state that it's now confirmed that Chris Pratt will be in an Indiana Jones movie.
Those stories, when they run, will be wrong. It will be a beautiful example of the way people connect dots, whether those dots are meant to be connected or not.
Vanity Fair has the story right, but even their headline makes it sound like this is closer to happening than it actually is. They are very careful with their phrasing in the story itself, though. Yes, Kathleen Kennedy and Disney would like to make another Indiana Jones film. And, yes, in order to do that, they will need to find a story they like, and then turn that story into a screenplay they like.
They are a long way from doing that right now. “Star Wars” has been the top priority for Lucasfilm since the moment Kennedy took the job running the company, and it remains their top priority right now. Indy is one of the most recognizable and beloved characters in movie history. Of course they are going to do something else with Indy at some point.
But all today's story really does is underline the idea that they are nowhere near ready to start casting, and all of those casting rumors that have been floating around are wrong for that exact reason. They're not going to cast the character if they don't even know what story they're telling yet. Besides, before they do anything, you better believe Disney and Lucasfilm will reach out to Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg, and they're not going to move forward at all until both of those men make their own decisions about how much they do or don't want to be involved.
So, yes… Indiana Jones will one day ride again. Not tomorrow, though, and not until there's a reason to put him back in the saddle. Once Lucasfilm finds a writer, then things can start moving forward. Until then, this is all just “wouldn't it be nice?”
