Run for cover, slowly: ‘Godzilla 2’s’ release date is a long way off

Go, Go, Godzilla.

Gareth Edward's forthcoming giant-monster sequel has been slated for release on June 8, 2018, it was revealed by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures on Thursday. The director will take on the project after helming his 2016 “Star Wars” spinoff for Disney.

The “Godzilla” followup got some play at this year's Comic-Con when Legendary teased appearances by classic Godzilla monsters Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah in the film. This announcement followed the first entry's massive $93.2 million opening weekend on its way to a total worldwide gross of over $500 million; it was also critically well-received, with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 73% “Fresh.”
