Warner Bros. picks ‘Dope’ actor to play Iris West in ‘The Flash’ movie

The Warner Bros. movie universe has just cast Kiersey Clemons as Iris West for The Flash starring Ezra Miller. The film is set to be directed by Rick Famuyiwa who also directed the actor in his critically acclaimed Dope.

Variety reports Clemons will join Miller who already made his debut as Barry Allen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (we just saw a lot more of him in the first Justice League trailer!). Although it's not confirmed, Variety writes, “Insiders reveal that Clemons is likely to play Iris West, the tough-as-nails journalist and friend of Barry Allen, the Flash”s alter ego.”

You may recall actor Candice Patton made headlines when she was cast as Iris for The CW's The Flash because she didn't look quite like the comic book version of the character (she's been fantastic in the role, just as Grant Gustin has been as Barry). At the time, The CW was specifically looking to cast a woman of color in the role and it's nice to see the film continuing with that. Though THR's Borys Kit said earlier this month both Lucy Boynton and singer Rita Ora's names were also in the mix.

Famuyiwa was hired for the directing gig last month and while I'm not personally familiar his work, our own Drew McWeeny was very excited by the prospect. Clemons has been working hard these last few years starring in Extant, Transparent, New Girl, and more recently Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. I'm very much looking forward to her Iris West.
