As Drew McWeeny reported, Warner Brothers is demonstrating their faith in, and commitment to, Margot Robbie and her Harley Quinn with the development of a vehicle for the actress/character.
Robbie herself took the initiative while she was doing research for the role and hired a writer to help her develop a story centered on both Harley and DC's rich female characters. It's an interesting notion, and Warner Bros. moving forward with the project before Suicide Squad is even released speaks to their enthusiasm for what Robbie is doing with the role.
Interestingly enough, Girls on Film co-host Alicia Malone interviewed Robbie and her co-star Tina Fey for Whiskey Tango Foxtrot at which time the actress' asked her which male-centric movie she'd like to see remade with a female cast. Malone offered Fight Club as a selection, at which point Fey very pointedly nudged Robbie.
When Malone originally relayed the story I didn't think much of it other than as a fun anecdote that perhaps indicates that Robbie has an affection for Fight Club — one of my personal favorites. I now have to wonder if there was greater significance. Might Robbie be using Fight Club as a model for a film focused on these bada** DC ladies? And might she have told Fey about it? It's a tantalizing notion. Not a direct aping of the film, of course, but as a reference that's a pretty great place to start. Of course it's possible that I'm reading far more into that moment and Fey was simply saying, “you'd be great in that” to Robbie, which she would.
