A man armed with a machete attacked two female officers in Charleroi, Belgium on Saturday. The assailant reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the attack on a police station in the city and reports that followed noted that ISIS had claimed responsibility to the attack according to CNN:

The armed man penetrated a secure zone and wounded the officers, who suffered deep cuts around their faces, according to Radio Télévision Belge Francophone (RTBF). One officer was transported to a hospital, the other was less seriously wounded.

The attacker was shot by a third officer on the scene and died later at a hospital, according to RTBF.

The attack is the latest in a string of “lone wolf” attacks that seem to either be ordered or inspired by the terror group, keeping the population on edge following major attacks in Paris or Brussels. RT is reporting that another possible assailant was arrested while carrying a machete:

“There are indications that the attack may have been inspired by a terrorist motive,” the Belgian prosecutors said in a statement, adding that two houses were searched in the city as part of the case.

Earlier on Sunday, Belgian police arrested another man with a machete, reportedly of Turkish origin, this time in the eastern city of Liege.

Video from the scene of the attack shows police swarming the area and creating a security perimeter. The officers involved in the attack were rushed to the hospital, with the most severe suffering deep cuts to her face according to RT.
