Donald Trump Reverses Course On NATO: ‘It’s No Longer Obsolete’

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump held a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg following a meeting between the two. Despite Trump’s treatment of German Chancellor Angela Merkel regarding a “multibillion dollar bill owed to the US over NATO defense,” the president seemed to reverse his former opinion on the alliance during the press conference, saying:

“The secretary general and I had a productive discussion about what more NATO can do in the fight against terrorism. I complained about that a long time ago and they made a change, and now they do fight terrorism. I said it [NATO] was obsolete. It’s no longer obsolete.

If other countries pay their fair share instead of relying on the United States to make up the difference we will all be much more secure.”

This seemingly diplomatic stance is a sharp contrast to Trump’s former opinions regarding NATO, once again proving that all of Trump’s old tweets will eventually come back to haunt him.

Trump also claimed in a pre-inauguration interview that “I took such heat, when I said NATO was obsolete. It’s obsolete because it wasn’t taking care of terror. I took a lot of heat for two days. And then they started saying Trump is right.” Still, it’s good to see him playing well with others, as Secretary General Stoltenberg claimed that they had an “excellent and very productive meeting.”
