“Victorious People” – Review Of Zion I & The Grouch’s Heroes In The Healing Of The Nation

Whoever said Hip-Hop lost the ability to cultivate messages within enjoyable music obviously didn't have Zion I and their honorary third wheel, The Grouch, in their opinionated statements. Their second album together, Heroes In The Healing Of The Nation, is an effective tool of edutainment; combining social commentary with traditional experimentation for a largely fresh thesis. The days of having a disparate palette of topics in an album are far and few between yet Z&G are headstrong in their mission, covering ground from proper parenting to decision making and your occasional spacey record. For the latter portion, the pack of Cali scholars don their moon boots and take to orbit on "Rockit Man," equipped with a pulsating metronome where Zumbi instructs "learn to be a rocket/we exist at subatomic/levels/all them devils that you keep in your pocket/return to their sender/getting burned in your optic/now the cycle has a logic/some would call it cosmic," and once on again "Journey To Forever" as it earns a clear distinction thanks in part to Mystic's spoken word and Eric Rachmany's airy chorus.

Zion I & The Grouch – “Healing Of The Nation” Video

Where most listeners have gotten used to Zion I’s eclectic, Tribe and De La-influenced sound, their collaboration with The Grouch, Heroes in the Healing of the Nation finds all parties pushing their musical boundaries into other realms. The makeshift title track is one such example with AmpLive laying down a heavily distorted rock-like backdrop for Z and G to spit over. It’s a track that preaches the group’s zeal and desire to make a difference through their rhymes. With guitar chords and synths blaring through the speakers, the energy is almost tangible and even more visible in the video. Zion I And The Grouch Are Answering The Call Once Again

Back like they never left, Zion I and The Grouch are reunited from 2006's Heroes In The City Of Dope for more affirmative action with Heroes In The Healing Of The Nation, their sophomore collaboration effort as an official unit. Five years is really forty-seven in rap years, so Amp Live makes sure to turn the bass up to max levels so Zumbi and The Grouch can remind you why they stood tall as a trio in the first place. An in-studio performance without weed and liquor is virtually unheard of in this era of kush this-in-that, but a few well-placed dancers and crystal clear camera work do the West Coaster's presentation much justice here. And who wouldn't jump at the chance to take their raps on a higher plane, to a new galaxy where no man has gone before. Yep, they do that too. Zumbi shaved the dreads, now he's Just Blaze stunt double. Just thought I put that out there. Check to see if the Healers are headed to a town near you over at www.zioniandthegrouch.com and the album is available on iTunes and Amazon.
