Fox Is Reportedly Discussing An ‘X-Men’ TV Show

For many nerds of a certain age, the best comic-to-screen adaption of Marvel’s X-Men isn’t X-Men: The Last Stand or X-Men: First Class, despite FX thinking it’s the greatest movie ever, if number of times the film airs a day equals quality — it’s X-Men: The Animated Series, a brightly colored mainstay of Fox Kids’ Saturday morning lineup from 1992-1997. There have been other mutant shows other the years, including the one-season-only Wolverine and the X-Men, but none have been half as good as X-Men: TAS. Hopefully Fox can strike gold twice.

EW confirmed that discussions are underway for a small-screen version of [X-Men], with THR adding (unconfirmed) that Star Trek 3 writers Patrick McKay and JD Payne would pen the script and 24 veterans Evan Katzand Manny Coto have been lined up as producers.

There are no creative details yet, though it seems unlikely that the most popular characters, such as Wolverine, would be in a [Fox] series version — at least as adults — given the way comic book rights owners have handled their other TV offspring of big-screen draws so far (like how Gotham is a Batman-less prequel and Agents of SHIELD focuses on sideline characters in the Avenger-verse). Without Wolverine, maybe the show can focus on the lesser-known X-Men, including Maggott, Sludger, and Ugly John, only one of whom isn’t real. Try to guess who it is!
