In 1999, after turning down an invitation from Shasta McNasty, Bob Dylan appeared on an episode of the long-forgotten sitcom Dharma & Greg as himself. Nearly a year earlier, one of Bob’s rock star friends was also offered an opportunity to guest star on a TV show, but he turned it down. That musician: Paul McCartney. That show: Shasta McNasty, I mean, Friends.

The series’ casting director, Leslie Litt, recently told Huffington Post that she wanted the Beatles singer to play the father of Emily, Ross’ wife. She even spoke to his manager.

“One day, someone in the office brought me a faxed letter written to me by Paul himself!” [Litt said] “He thanked me for my interest and said how flattered he was, but it was a very busy time for him.”

McCartney telling Ross’s dad that “I could kill you with my thumb” does sound fun, but he still doesn’t rank in the top fiveof my Musicians I Wish Had Been on 1990s Shows Power Rankings that I definitely didn’t just make up. No. 5, Keith Sweat on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. No. 4, Andy Kaufman as Elvis on Full House. No. 3, Lostprophets on 7th Heaven. No. 2, Jagged Edge on JAG. No. 1, Spacehog on Homeboys in Outer Space.

Paul’s in the Top 10, though.
