Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the directors of 22 Jump Street, The Lego Movie, and about a million upcoming projects, including the Han Solo spin-off film, somehow found 12 or so hours in their schedule to listen to Serial.

Y’know, the podcast about the Mail Kimp girl and nothing else.

Anyway, because Serial introduced podcasts to people who had never listened to podcasts before, it’s being turned into a TV show that Lord and Miller will help develop. The series will not cover the murder of Hae Min Lee, which season one already did, or season two’s Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl case.

Lord and Miller are big fans of the podcast, an offshoot of This American Life. The duo secured the rights from the producers and brought the project to Fox 21 TVS as part of their overall deal with 20th Century Fox/F21TVS under which they executive produce Fox comedy series Last Man on Earth. Separately, F21TVS president Bert Salke had been interested in a Serial TV series and has another project in development at the cable unit with the This American Life team.

“Chris and Phil take an unexpected approach to telling stories and that is so appealing to us at Serial,” Snyder said. “Developing a show with them is exciting because we feel like we speak the same language, only they’re smarter than us.” (Via)

The Serial TV show is actually a prequel AND sequel to Last Man on Earth, in which we see Will Forte’s character kill nearly everyone on Earth (the prequel), and it’s up to Kristen Schaal to solve the case (the sequel). Sarah Koenig is just kind of there, quietly narrating the entire thing.

Okay, probably not, but that would be pretty great.
