The Top Baby Names Of 2016 Are Inspired By Our Favorite Pop Culture Hits

Naming your kid is pretty serious business. They’re stuck with it for the rest of their lives, so give them something crappy, and they’re stuck explaining why their parents chose such a unique way of spelling “Madison” whenever they fill out a form or go to Starbucks. It makes sense that people would pull from their favorite television shows and movies when they’re looking to name their spawn, with superfans naming their kids after Game of Thrones and Star Wars favorites. According to BabyCenter, this trend has continued through 2016, and some of your binging favorites are definitely represented.

Fans of The Walking Dead seem content to name their children after their favorite miserable survivors, with Tyreese (up 48% since 2015), Hershel (up 37%), and Carol (up 18%) moving up the ranks. The adorable kids (and Winona Ryder) from Stranger Things also made an impression, with Dustin (up 32%), Mike (up 28%), and Joyce (up 23%) making leaps in popularity. Sadly, Eleven had no such luck. Comic books movies also made an impression, with Banner (as in Bruce) was up 48% and Harley (as in Quinn) was up 35%.

Additionally, the real world also had an impact on babymaking, with Hillary (up 64%), Ivanka (up 39%), Ellen (up 30%), and Venus (up 26%) all climbed through the ranks, hopefully ushering in the next generation of strong and ambitious women.
