T.J. Miller is really good at acceptance speeches, and hosting award shows where acceptance speeches are given (occasionally by adorable, wildly talented kids). The Deadpool star and phlegmy-voiced spokesperson for Mucinex was the master of ceremonies of Critics’ Choice Awards, where his Silicon Valley weirdly wasn’t nominated for Best Comedy Series (it went to Master of None). As anyone who knows anything about T.J. Miller could probably guess, he treated the gig with the same level of respect Michael Bay showed him on the set of Transformers: Age of Extinction.
Yes, his monologue involved puppets.
And yes, he had a ball gown cannon.
And yes, there were Yogi Bear references.
Unlike the self-satisfied Ricky Gervais, who received some heat for jokes he made during the Golden Globes, T.J. Miler isn’t in love with Ricky Gervais.
“I’m going to be talking to people tonight. But celebrities, don’t worry, I’m not going to Ricky Ger-vise this thing. I’m not going to do that. That’s not what I’m about. How awkward and abrasive do you have to be to make all of us in this room feel bad for Mel Gibson?”
That wasn’t the most news-worthy thing to happen at the otherwise-uneventful Critics Choice Awards, at least according to the Mirror. Oh no, that would be when Miller got “caught eyeing” Hayden Panettiere.
