When Pee-wee’s Big Holiday began filming in March, star Paul Reubens started blogging about the new Netflix film in character as the titular Pee-wee Herman. The posts were vague, and aside from a casting revelation, they didn’t reveal much about the Judd Apatow-produced endeavor. Yet none of this mattered to fans of Pee-wee’s Playhouse and Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. Why? Because one of the most iconic characters of the late ’80s and early ’90s was coming back, and he was returning to the comedy scene with a vengeance.
Hence the new 39-second announcement trailer from Netflix, which despite its brevity, accomplishes three important things. It 1) let’s everyone know that Pee-wee’s Big Holiday exists, 2) reveals the Netflix original film’s release date, and 3) previews a short scene from the actual movie to clue viewers unfamiliar with the character what kind of thing they’re about to subject themselves to.
Ever since Netflix announced the new film last February, fans of Reubens’ most memorable character have been waiting for every scrap of information they could get their hands on. The reveal of the new movie’s March 18 release date is the biggest draw of this new trailer, along with the two scenes that comprise it. The first appears either to have been created for the trailer or serves as part of the film’s credits sequence. The second throws a National Geographic joke at the audience. Yes, a National Geographic joke. Both, in their own way, appear to be perfectly Pee-wee.
Pee-wee’s Big Holiday will be available to stream on Friday, March 18 exclusively on Netflix.
