Pacific Rim 2 has seen plenty of ups and downs since it was initially announced last year. Not only did it come with a release date at announcement, but it also seemed to be carrying a lot of extra tie-in content with it. Then all of that seemed to fall apart and the project was announced to be dead, despite the protests of Guillermo del Toro.
Now it seems to be back, but del Toro is not directing. That honor has been given to genre superstar and Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight. DeKnight most recently helped bring Daredevil to life on Netflix and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, will make his feature film debut with some Kaiju smashing fun:
The current script for the project, which will be released worldwide by Universal, was written by Jon Spaihts and is based on characters created by del Toro and Beacham.
The 3D film will be produced by Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, del Toro and Mary Parent, with Jillian Share serving as executive producer.
Del Toro reacted to the news on Twitter and seemed extremely excited with the choice:
Met w DeKnight and we are all so happy with our choice to take Pac Rim 2to where we know it can go!!

And why wouldn’t he be? DeKnight has had a hand in so many different pots, including Buffy, Smallville, and Spartacus, so giving him the reins on del Toro’s world in Pacific Rim is exciting. The world building is done, so now you can cut loose — hopefully.
