Sally Field held nothing back while talking about playing Aunt May in The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel while on The Howard Stern Show on Tuesday. Our favorite part was when she likened it to trying to stuff “ten pounds of sh*t in a five-pound bag.” Now I’m picturing The Flying Nun saying that, while wearing the hat and everything.
Here’s the pertinent audio, and Vulture provides a transcription:
“It’s not my kind of movie. But my friend Laura Ziskin was the producer, and we knew it would be her last film, and she was my first producing partner, and she was a spectacular human.” [Ziskin died in 2011.] Stern asked how much thought Field put into the character. “Not a great deal. […] It’s really hard to find a three-dimensional character in it, and you work it as much as you can, but you can’t put ten pounds of sh*t in a five-pound bag.” (Via)
We can’t blame her for thinking that, considering how little her character did in the two films, despite the hilarious rumors about an Aunt May spinoff movie. And hopefully people will be kinder about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man standalone movie (opening July 7, 2017) than they were to Andrew Garfield. Field had only nice things to say about working with Garfield.
Field now joins a long list of Spider-Man alums expressing displeasure with The Amazing Spider-Man or The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Willem Dafoe likened them to a cynical cash grab, as did James Franco not once, but twice. And the composer for the first movie, Oscar-winner James Horner, refused to work on the sequel and called it “just dreadful.” Full disclosure: I didn’t like the sequel, either.
Fortunately, Andrew Garfield still seems to be doing just fine, as he keeps a good attitude about things.
