Space Jam 2 is probably, maybe, possibly happening, and it might, could, potentially star LeBron James, despite all evidence to the contrary. This means two things: 1) cast Steph Curry in the MJ role instead, because there’s nothing he can’t do right now (his wife agrees), and 2) people still really care about the inexplicably popular shoe commercial that is Space Jam. Especially the film’s director, Joe Pytka, who said that the sequel is “doomed”:
As for the sequel, the original film’s director Joe Pytka has this advice: “Don’t do it. It’s doomed. Michael Jordan was the biggest star on the planet… When we did Space Jam, there was a perfect storm of players and ex-players available — Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing,” says Pytka. “They all had a persona that complemented the film. There are none around like that now.”
Pytka sounds like the guy who complains about instant replay in NFL games to no one at the bar. “Bronko Nagurski didn’t need no pansy challenges.” Let’s say LeBron (who, it should be noticed, was a thousand times funnier in Trainwreck than Jordan was in Space Jam, or ever) or Steph gets the lead role — that still leaves Broad City guest star Blake Griffin, Dirk Nowitzki, and Chris Bosh (who’s worked with Funny or Die), among others, on the sidelines. To call Space Jam 2 “doomed” is giving way too little credit to today’s players (again, watch Blake on Broad City), and way too much credit to Space Jam.
