Your regular It’s Always Sunny recapper, Maske, is away at some unholy incestuous civil ceremony, probably, so I’m taking over for this episode — and what an episode it was. “Maureen Ponderosa’s Wedding Massacre,” only the show’s second true Halloween episode, after season six’s “Who Got Dee Pregnant?” (or am I misremembering something?), was a straight-up horror movie…well, not quite parody; more like an homage, to zombies and bats and scary close-ups of bears and that terrifying episode of The X-Files, “Home.”
Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, and Rob McElhenney have been having fun playing with the boundaries and expectations of what makes an It’s Always Sunny episode this season, which is why I liked “Wedding Massacre” as much as Dennis liked Maureen’s boobs, before he really saw them. Having it air around Halloween allowed for a convenient (and ingenious) way of trying something new, in the way the horrific Ponderosa/McPoyle milk-only wedding was written and filmed, with the bloody title sequence, time-jumps, and scenes straight out of a found footage film (yet enough Sunny-isms, like Charlie and Mac’s hilarious Batman chat and failed car escape, to keep it from being too out there). That’s how a show that’s been on for eight seasons remains a must-watch every week.
Plus, Guillermo del Toro played a crazy man who screamed about eating babies. That’s a major plus.
