The upcoming Star Trek Beyond will come just in time to celebrate 50 years of Star Trek, dating back to the original airing of the original series on broadcast television here in the United States. Beyond is the continuation of the J.J. Abrams-helmed reboot of the franchise, with this third film produced by Abrams and directed by Justin Lin. The third film will focus on the Vulcans in search of a new home while The Enterprise is attacked by a wave of seemingly-unstoppable aliens, forcing them to abandon ship over a strange, unknown planet.
This latest spot for Star Trek Beyond, called Unity focuses on some of the action that moviegoers can expect of the upcoming film that’s set for a July 22nd release, including strange new races of aliens and a focus on the crew having to work together, thus the whole “unity” thing. It’ll be interesting to see where this film heads, with Star Trek Into Darkness serving as a quasi-remake of the classic Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The Abrams films have diverged enough from the original Star Trek universe that it’s entirely possible to revisit past themes and plots from the original films, but probably a good idea not to.
Star Trek III: The Search For Spock relied upon the events of The Wrath of Khan, including Spock’s death and his body being sent to a planet being terraformed by the Genesis project from the second film. Needless to say, these plotlines were not a part of Star Trek Into Darkness and this new film might be just that — entirely new — to Star Trek fans.
