In which 30 Rock aired a day early, as alone as Pete on Election Day 2012.
- 30 Rock: I’ve done precisely zero research on this, but my gut feeling tells me that the first part of a two-part sitcom episode is often superior to the second. It seems like it should be the other way around, though, with the first episode doing all the boring story set-up, and the second reacting to the previously established plot points; hopefully hilarity ensues. And yet, “Who Shot Mr. Burns? Part I” is superior to “Part II,” as is Archer‘s “Space Race: Part I” and Community‘s “A Fistful of Paintballs,” which was followed by the disappointing “For a Few Paintballs More.” I bring this up because “There’s No I in America” wasn’t as good as last week’s “Unwindulax.” Simply put, it wasn’t as funny. I still enjoyed the Motorized Intelligent Technodrone Terminat— out of it, but the satire wasn’t as sharp, and the moment both episodes had been building up to, a debate between Jack and Liz, could have been stronger; it kept bringing up the same Jenna-isms that 30 Rock has gone to a billion times before. Then again, the episode was redeemed for me during the final minute, with the Stone Mountain eagle grabbing Kenneth’s absentee ballot and, best of all, Jack and Liz mistakenly swapping drinks. That’s 30 Rock at its best.
