It took 18 seasons for The Simpsons to get around to making a movie. Despite having been canceled twice, Family Guy, Fox’s long-time Sunday night compatriot to (and occasionally sparring partner with) Matt Groening’s animated family, will return in September for a 15th season. Unfortunately for fans of celebrity cutaways and chicken fights, it might take the Griffins even longer to hit the big screen than the Simpsons. Which, Simpsons did it?
Last year, creator Seth MacFarlane tweeted that a Family Guy movie — with presumably even longer and more elaborate musicals — would happen “soon.” How soon is it now? That part was left unanswered, but during a San Diego Comic-Con panel over the weekend, producer Alec Sulkin elaborated. “I think it’s always talked about,” he said. “There are no specific plans for a movie right now, but it is something that’s on Seth’s mind. If I were a gambling man, I’d say within the next five years, probably there’ll be something.” Added fellow producer Rich Appel, “And I can tell you, he is a gambling man.”
So, you can expect a Family Guy movie within the next half-decade, unlike a new Star Wars parody. With all due respect to Han Solo, the odds are zero. “Blue Harvest,” “Something, Something, Something, Dark Side,” and “It’s a Trap!” are three of the show’s most popular episodes, but Sulkin said the writers were “ready to kill ourselves” after the Return of the Jedi spoof. “The new regime at Star Wars/Disney is, I would say, a little more difficult to deal with. I think before, we were just dealing with Lucasfilm, and Seth [MacFarlane] had a good relationship with them. And not that Seth has a bad relationship with Disney. I just think they’re a little more rigid, legally.” (Via)
I can’t imagine why Disney wouldn’t want to be involved with Family Guy.
