Lin-Manuel Miranda may have ended his run as Alexander Hamilton on the cultural phenomenon Hamilton, but apparently he’s not done making musicals. In a new video released in conjunction with GQ‘s latest cover story, the multi-talented Miranda shared his latest triumph, Trump the Musical: Written Entirely From Tweets. Before he started singing, the 36-year-old noted, “I have not changed a word of these [tweets], only added melody.”
The tongue-in-cheek showtunes focus on Trump’s “backhanded” and “racially questionable” holiday greetings, including the infamous Cinco De Mayo tweet promoting his Trump Tower Grill taco bowls — because he loves Hispanics! Another selected tweet hones in on the presidential candidate’s “best wishes to all, even the haters and losers, on this special date, September 11.”
All the satire is good for a much-needed laugh, but the video splashes some cold water on viewers by closing with the statement, “Trump the Musical. Coming November 8th (Maybe).” So while the newly ponytail-less Miranda lets the tweets and his singing do the talking, there’s a dose of reality thrown in at the end. As a well-known Democratic party supporter — he’s freestyled for President Obama and staged a one-off performance of Hamilton at Hillary Clinton’s fundraiser, it’s no secret who will be getting his vote come November.
