Months after his last appearance, Jon Stewart finally made a repeat appearance to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. After months of rumors that Stewart would be joining his former partner in crime for one of Colbert’s many post-debate live shows and even more waiting during the 2016 Election’s worst moments, the former Daily Show host returned to the studio at long last to help America through the last of this awful, awful election.
No matter your political loyalties, you can agree that humor is one of the only ways many people have been getting through this months-long slog of antagonistic speeches and insults. No one provides better political relief humor than Jon Stewart, and he proved it once again in his appearance on Monday. An appearance that included not one, but two spit takes from Jon. Colbert jokingly cracked that he “forgot his snorkel” after he was drenched by the second one.
It also, naturally, included Stewart showing up dressed as Uncle Sam (or was it The Music Man? or a Homecoming King from 1945?) and the two of them carrying out an entire song and dance before launching into their skit for the night. The skit, which included a full-on theatrical number with a small child singing from the position of a street urchin too scared to vote, served as a lesson in why to vote and included line-kicks and a little bit of Colbert showing off his Company vocal talents.
Jon Stewart showing up in full patriotic regalia had the opposite view – that voting is not a big deal and that Democracy is optional. Of course, Colbert had to set him straight by reminding him that no, Walter Mondale is not running for president this year and it is actually Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton. Jon has clearly been spending too much time holed up on that farm away from any political coverage (oh wait… that actually sounds marvelous).
That wasn’t the only surprise that Colbert had in store though, as Javier Muñoz from the Broadway hit musical Hamilton showed up briefly to rap about the election. Colbert’s booking department was definitely working overtime for his last big show before Election Day.
The lesson here is to get out and vote on Tuesday, that the little girl should definitely write for Slate in a few years when she can be legally paid, and that there’s always time for Yentl.
