If you love beer and you also enjoy bending your body into awkward positions with the intention of becoming one with your mind, body, and soul then beer yoga is for you. How else are you going to get your buzz on while you’re wearing yoga pants, stuck in a downward facing dog?
Beer Yoga is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. It’s a combination of yoga and beer drinking. Like many beer-related ideas, beer yoga began in Germany. A group called BierYoga had been enjoying the oddly paired combination in Berlin before recently branching out to Australia.
According to the official website, “BeerYoga is the marriage of two great loves – beer and yoga. Both are centuries-old therapies for body, mind and soul. The joy of drinking beer and the mindfulness of yoga compliment each other, and make for an energizing experience.”
“Basically, I played around with it in my room with a Radler [half beer, half lemonade or soda],” BierYoga co-founder Jhula told Vice in an interview from last spring. From such tiny moments, great things come.
This isn’t exactly brand new, you can find yoga classes at breweries all over the country. There is even a touring beer yoga group (called BeerYoga) in the states that was founded in 2014 by a woman named Brooke Larson. She organizes beer yoga events and guest teachings at breweries all over the US.
This might seem like a joke, but Jhula and Emily, the certified yoga teachers who run the program, take it very seriously. I mean, there’s nothing more serious than chugging a full beer while your body is contorted in ways that you haven’t been able to accomplish since you quit gymnastics when you were a kid. I guess if something is going to get us to finally try yoga, maybe beer will be it.
