The Return Of ‘American Idol’ And ‘Marvel’s Inhumans’ Lead The ABC Fall 2017 Lineup

ABC made waves last week when the network announced it would revive the hugely popular American Idol, so it’s no surprise that the reality competition series’ return headlines the network’s fall 2017 schedule announced on Tuesday. The post-IMAX theatrical release run of Marvel’s Inhumans, a live television musical based on Disney’s The Little Mermaid, a time-travelling refugee drama titled The Crossing, and a rather goofy-sounding police procedural drama called Deception (in which a magician plays consulting detective) round out the list of additions, renewals and rescheduled slots.

“I’m very proud of this year’s slate of series at ABC,” said ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey in a statement. “We’ve focused on some of the universal themes that unite us — exciting stories, relevant dramas, and of course, lots of laughs. Our goal is to focus on the unique points of view of our show creators, but make shows that have broad appeal.”

ABC didn’t officially mention when American Idol would premiere, though their release did say “a [new] host and judges will be announced at a later time.” Meanwhile, Inhumans was announced for the late Friday time slot — as was a Jennifer Morrison-less Once Upon a Time. The network also reshuffled many of its returning comedies — like Fresh Off the Boat, black-ish and American Housewife — to the Tuesday and Wednesday blocks, which also include new comedies like The Mayor.

The previously announced Roseanne revival, which ABC won in an intense bidding war against Netflix, was noticeably absent from Tuesday’s upfronts. However, The Hollywood Reporter broke the “official” news of the classic sitcom’s return, which Dungey said is “still at the early stages” of production. Once all is said and done, new episodes of Roseanne will likely air in the middle or the latter half of the upcoming fall season.
