The Boston Celtics were no match for LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night. The basketball world was stunned by the utter beatdown the Celtics endured, with Cleveland putting up one of the most impressive first half performances in postseason history en route to an easy 2-0 series win.
Naturally, the internet reacted with a mix of horror and glee. Many Cleveland fans began calling the win the Boston Massacre, a reference to the March 1770 shooting of Boston colonists by British soldiers that went on to spark the American Revolution.
Someone even went to change the Wikipedia entry for the Boston Massacre to make LeBron and the Cavaliers responsible for the atrocity.
Meanwhile, Inside the NBA went a little less U.S. history and a little more Warner Brothers in its recap of the game on Friday night.
Sports have a way of turning ordinary events into hyperbole, and this is no exception. But there’s good reason to believe that Game 2 of the 2017 Eastern Conference Finals really does go down in history as the Boston Massacre as time passes.
There’s no precedent for the beating Boston took in the first half on Friday night, and with a Cavaliers sweep likely it will definitely be the signature game of this series.
Either way, it’s a night that’s going to be remembered around the NBA for a long time.
