When it’s a slow sports day and the main hosts are away, why not talk about eating squirrel? At least that’s what Anthony “Booger” McFarland seemed to be thinking on Mike & Mike.
The ESPN radio guest host talked about eating squirrel on Tuesday morning, casting the show into a truly weird place as it veers toward its natural conclusion, though without its two regular hosts for the day.
Fellow guest host Trey Wingo was talking about Twitter handles when the former NFL player casually asked, “By the way have you ever eaten squirrel?”

Wingo said no, and McFarland did his best to convince Trey that it’s a normal and also good thing to eat.
“No. No. We’re just gonna …” Wingo trailed off, unable to properly react. Later, though, he asked how the squirrel was prepared.
“Stewed, with a little gravy,” McFarland said.
“Gonna need a lot of gravy,” Wingo replied.

I’ve actually edited a book for children about odd American foods, so I have a pretty open mind about this stuff. Cultural oddities are the norm in a country as large and as varied as America, and tastes vary. Still, if this is the territory the show is veering toward in its final months, we’re going to have a very interesting Mike & Mike on our hands in its final episodes.
The show is coming to a conclusion after 18 years and it’s safe to say the mood is tense. Reports say that Greenburg and Golic won’t even make eye contact off air, and they addressed their split in less than amicable ways when it was made official last month. Greenburg is getting his own ESPN morning show, while Golic will join Wingo and his son Mike Golic Jr. on a radio show in 2018, though his other son was initially not happy with ESPN splitting Mike & Mike up.
Maybe McFarland is right: everyone should just have some stew and relax. There’s a lot of 2017 left before Mike & Mike — and its subsequent drama — is over.
