NBA fans may be hovering near their computers or refreshing social media feeds on their phones as the clock strikes midnight on Saturday and June turns to July. One of the top free agents on the market, however, will be otherwise occupied.
Paul George is the big target for a number of NBA teams, including his hometown Los Angeles Lakers. But the Thunder, where he’s played for the last year, would also like to have him back and there have been a growing number of reports stating that OKC is now the favorite to land George. That’s why the news that Russell Westbrook is throwing a party on the eve of free agency seems like significant news to NBA fans wondering where George is heading next.
Westbrook appears to be having a party for a few hundred people, and rapper Nas is expected to perform. But the big news, of course, is that George will be at the party the moment he will be eligible to sign a new contract.
Rumors of the party swirled on Saturday, and ESPN’s Royce Young reported later that evening that the ‘summer hype house party’ will have George in attendance.
Westbrook has organized the party, dubbed a “summer hype house party,” that’s being held at a property near Lake Arcadia, inviting around 500 guests with the promise of a “surprise performance by a multi-platinum artist.”
Sources tell ESPN that artist is Nas. The invitation says, “The FOMO will be real.” Invited guests were required to sign a non-disclosure agreement.
If George does, indeed, attend it will be a party that could mean a few different things. There’s a chance it’s a celebration for George committing to Oklahoma City, as a prominent OKC barber is reporting. If his mind isn’t made up yet, however, it could be a decent recruiting party to remind George that there’s plenty of fun to be had in Oklahoma City. Or maybe it’s just a fun Saturday night. Who can say, really?
