The ‘More Adult’ Muppets Revival Series Is Officially A Go At ABC

Hey, remember that Muppets revival series ABC was tinkering with in its shed last month? Tightening screws, buffing fenders, bringing in veterans of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Big Bang Theory to write and produce, etc. Well, ABC had their upfronts last night and, yup, Kermit and company are officially coming back with a primetime series order. But don’t expect your usual kiddie version of the Muppets. No, this is for grown-ups. Or something! TIME has the story.

For the first time ever, the series will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires—a more adult Muppet show, for kids of all ages. The recent pilot presentation, we’re told, received a standing ovation when it screened for ABC executives a couple weeks ago.

Okay, so I’m not the only one who read “romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires—a more adult Muppet show,” and immediately pictured, like, an all-Muppet Melrose Place? Because, don’t get me wrong, I love the Muppets dearly, and this current project has at least my tentative support, but now I desperately want to see Muppet Melrose Place instead of whatever this show is. Not my fault. They opened the door.

Can’t be weirder than the time Bobo the Bear seduced Cindy Crawford on Muppets Tonight.
