Do a news search for DeMarcus Cousins and the top results question his leadership. That’s nothing new, as Sacramento Kings minority owner Shaquille O’Neal recently questioned Boogie’s brain on Inside the NBA. Further down the page, the more obvious results: trade rumors. Again, even Shaq fuels this particular fire by mentioning the Kings’ “different direction,” and anonymous GMs from both NBA conferences think it’s only a matter of time before Sacramento wises up and drops the price tag on the star player. He may be a “hothead” with bad leadership skills, but he’ll certainly make a contender much stronger.
Oh! There’s also the $25,000 fine for entering the stands after being called for a technical foul (later, he received another from the league), and that piggybacks on his constant issues with officials and the lack of calls in his favor, as he gets his butt kicked on a nightly basis. And let’s not forget when he got into it with Lakers power forward Julius Randle. People are still talking about that one.
That’s a lot of bad and negative news, sure, but it doesn’t mean that Cousins is a bad dude. Case in point, the one news story sandwiched between the trade rumors and leadership questions: Cousins teamed up with the Boys and Girls Club of Sacramento to take 150 kids to an early screening of the new Disney film Moana, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Looks like all those hits and slaps beneath the basket are turning this hot head into a big softy.
