When Arnold first announced he was going to stop doing politics and return to movies, a lot of us got pretty excited. That excitement faded somewhat once we saw the kinds of movies he was actually making (basically Eraser but with more jokes about how he’s old). But now the ol’ mulatto ass lover is starring opposite Little Miss Sunshine Abigail Breslin in Maggie, a post-apocalyptic zombie thriller hitting theaters and VOD May 8th. I wouldn’t normally call a post-apocalyptic zombie movie a “departure,” but it feels like a departure for Arnold.
It might be silly to expect anything from a movie hitting VOD and theaters simultaneously, but to employ a Stallone metaphor, I’m holding out a small hope that this is going be more like Arnold’s Copland than Arnold’s Expendables. At the very least, tough guy dad protects his zombie daughter seems like a fresh take. “Okay, so Little Miss Sunshine is a zombie now, but The Terminator protects her.”
Sidenote: Has there ever been a post-apocalyptic scenario where the main guy didn’t drive an old pick-up truck?
