Ever since Tom Holland showed up in Captain America: Civil War as the brand new Spider-Man that everyone seems to love, it became a safe assumption that other studios might see the light. After all, Sony has struggled with its recent Spider-Man movies and its plans to use them as the basis of an interconnected universe of sequels and spin-offs. That has to be frustrating when Disney is making billions from the ongoing success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, when Kevin Feige asked Sony to let his magic-makers help fix Spidey and correct the mistakes of the less-than-Amazing Andrew Garfield films, it made perfect sense that Tom Rothman said, “Have at it!” and cracked his knuckles before sketching a picture of the mega-yacht he’s going to have built.
And while Spider-Man: Homecoming continues to add familiar faces to its massive cast, a new rumor is making the rounds that suggests Fox is thinking that it could be time for a Marvel alliance as well. Obviously, we take any “sources”-based rumor with a grain of salt, but this one is a lot of fun. According to Collider Heroes guest Matt Key, who produces Kevin Smith’s Fatman on Batman podcast and “rocks the Marvel movie news,” Fox might be in the earliest possible stages of maybe, possibly, potentially letting the X-Men team up with the Avengers. Maybe.
That’s a lot of video to watch, and the first half hour of it addresses a Justice League set visit, followed by Key and the other panelists speculating about the aforementioned daily Spider-Man casting announcements. Around the 1:19-mark, in an answer to a Twitter question about whether or not we’ll see the original X-Men team in action on the big screen, Key gets the biggest rumor of the month buzzing, as he drops this subtle bomb:
I’ve heard from a few of my… sources, my little birds, Fox and Marvel have kind of talked but not really, but like there’s interest from Fox, like, “What you did with Sony and Spider-Man is actually pretty cool, like, maybe” – we’re years away from that ever possibly happening, but I think that’s what it would take, Fox joining hands with Marvel.
As exciting as it would be to see Cyclops and Jean Grey fighting alongside Captain America and Vision in an epic battle to stop Thanos from wooing Death by destroying life throughout the galaxy with his shiny glove, it would, again, be years from now, and therefore we’d probably be well into Phase 12 or something. And who knows which Avengers will be saving the world in Avengers: Come On, Who Let Thanos Out of Space Jail Again?, other than Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, obviously.
But, hell, there isn’t much else happening, so let’s geek out about it anyway. That’s what Marvel gets for making us wait four more months for Doctor Strange.
