Animated movies just haven’t been the same since Disney took over Pixar, but this looks fairly inspired. In case you haven’t heard about it before now, ‘Big Hero 6’ is an upcoming animated film from Disney, inspired by a Marvel comic, directed by Don Hall (‘Winnie the Pooh’) and Chris Williams (‘Bolt’), with voicework from Damon Wayans Jr., TJ Miller, Maya Rudolph, James Cromwell, and others, and a title stolen from my wang.
With all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, “Big Hero 6” is an action-packed comedy-adventure about robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his genius—thanks to his brilliant brother Tadashi and their like-minded friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. When a devastating turn of events catapults them into the midst of a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—and transforms the group into a band of high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery. Sorta sounds like Disney’s play to get in on that sweet sweet Pokémon toy money, doesn’t it? GRRR, ANCILLARY REVENUE! Which, honestly, kids movies have been doing for 50 years now. It’s fine if the movie’s good, and this one, at the very least, looks a little more inspired than, say, a snail who dreams of going fast. Still, a hero named “Hiro” in a movie called “Big Hero?” Who wrote this, Tyler Perry? If I find out the kid works at a sandwich shop I’m leaving.
