Leader in the clubhouse: Brendan’s three and four picks were kind of duds (for the purposes of this game, anyway), but his bomb pick came up huge and he still has Transformers 3 and Captain America opening. What an assh*le. (I had to pick fourth, by the way). Much as we laughed at Bret’s bomb pick, with a $195 million budget, Transformers 3 is all but guaranteed a budget minus opening of $90 million plus. I probably should’ve math’d this better. Regular box office stuff after the jump. (And again, thanks to the guys at MastersofNone for inventing this game so that we could steal it).

Cars 2 made lots of money despite not being very good, and duh, that’s kind of why they made it. Meanwhile, Bad Teacher came up huge, with a $31 million opening, which is big, especially for an R-rated comedy ($5 million more than Bridesmaids, on par with Knocked Up and Stepbrothers, though it probably won’t hold as well). It proves that Cameron Diaz can open a movie (even though none of her last few movies did that well — Green Hornet, Knight & Day, The Box, My Sister’s Keeper — but no one’s going to notice that). I’m not excited to see more of Cameron Diaz’s impression of someone funny, but between Bad Teacher, Bridesmaids, and Hangover, is there any reason to try to make comedies PG-13 anymore? Not that an R-rated comedy is necessarily always better, it’s just that waiting outside theaters to buy tickets for underage kids is a great way to meet chicks.
Meanwhile, Green Lantern‘s 65% drop was on par with Fantastic Four 2, a movie I compared it to in my review. Because they both sucked being the implication there. That one, which had a slightly bigger opening, went on to make $289 million worldwide. Green Lantern will probably earn out, just barely, and only because of 3D. But hey, at least it was faithful to the comic book. Or was it? To be honest, I really have no idea.
