Left Behind is a fire-and-brimstone Christian book series about society falling apart after the rapture, the movie adaptation of which originally starred Kirk Cameron and
spawned begat two sequels. It was wildly successful, but if there’s anything Christians love, it’s a resurrection, so now it’s being rebooted for mainstreamish audiences. Cloud Ten Pictures produced the original series, and Stoney Lake Entertainment is behind the $15 million reboot – though Cloud Ten and Stoney Lake are the same people.
Paul Lalonde, CEO of Stoney Lake Entertainment and co-founder of Cloud Ten Pictures, which produced and distributed the first three “Left Behind,” two of which went straight to video, told CP he’s rebooting the film to give it the blockbuster treatment many had felt the original version deserved, including LaHaye.
“… I’ve spent 24 years producing Christian-themed TV, films and documentaries that were made specifically for a Christian audience. Preaching to the choir so to speak. It has always been my goal to produce a big-budget version of ‘Left Behind’ that would appeal to a wider audience. The resources to do this exist now where they didn’t back in 2000,” Lalonde said via email. [Christian Post]
That strategy for reaching a broader audience? NIC CAGE, obviously. For his part, Nic Cage has already filed bankruptcy from buying castles and cobra venom and dinosaur skulls so I’m not going to say this is rock bottom – I’m not sure Nic Cage has a bottom – but starring in a reboot of a Kirk Cameron movie is certainly… something. All I want is for him to have a scene where he shouts “Crucify him again, Pontius! His soul is still saving!”
An airborne 747 is head to London when, without any warning, passengers mysteriously disappear from their seats. Terror and chaos spread not only through the plane but also worldwide as unusual events continue to unfold. For those who have been left behind, the apocalypse has just begun.
It’s hard to tell much from this first clip, but it certainly looks like a feast of royalty-free music. I wish they would’ve just gotten Candlebox to do it, since it’s practically named after one of their songs anyway. The lyrics even kind of fit.
“AH SAID BAY YAY YAYAAABAYYYY, I DID-UN MEAN TA TREAT YOU OH SO BAAAD… BUT AH DID IT ANYWAY… SO, NOW TIMES ARE CHANGIN, PLANES ARE FALLIN, WATCH IT CRUMBLE TO THE GROUND, AND WATCH THEM SUFFF-AH… YEAH YOU LEFT ME FAH BEHIND…”
It’s perfect. You can’t tell me super churchy Christians wouldn’t love Candlebox, why else would every Christian rock band sound like Candlebox?
