The Academy late yesterday released a list of some 75 songs that will be eligible for the Best Original Song Oscar when the nominations are released January 10th. The full list is after the jump, and there are a number of fascinating, thought-provoking, eyebrow-raising, and intriguing possibilities, but let’s face it, the only one that matters is “Ladies of Tampa,” which Matthew McConaughey not only co-wrote, but predicted would eventually be nominated for an Oscar. The man is a shirtless, greased up oracle.

In the original script, Matthew McConaughey’s character, club owner Dallas, did not have a stripping scene. But McConaughey not only wanted one, he knew exactly how it should play out: He’d begin by serenading the women from the stage with a slow song. Music supervisor Frankie Pine suggested she and McConaughey pen the tune with Martin Blasick, McConaughey’s guitar coach. They wrote ”Ladies of Tampa” in about three hours at McConaughey’s hotel. ”The song is silly as hell, but Matthew swears it’s gonna get nominated for an Academy Award. He keeps telling me I have to pick out my dress,”’ Pine says, laughing. ”And you know what, I am gonna submit it.”
If you were in a hotel room with Matthew McConaughey for three hours, I doubt writing a song was the only thing that happened, alright alright alright.

I don’t want to spoil anything, but the scene where Abraham Lincoln went in front of congress and sang “Beans Beans The Musical Fruit” accompanied by foot stomps and armpit farts totally got snubbed. What crap, Day-Lewis acted the hell out of that scene.

“When Can I See You Again?” from “Wreck-It Ralph”During the nominations process, all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a DVD copy of the song clips. Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category. The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award.
To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.
The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Academy, if you screw this one up, so help me I’ll… I’ll… well, I’ll continue to regard you with approximately the same level of contempt is probably what I’ll do.
