Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright, Daniel Brühl, and Willem Dafoe star in A Wanted Man, for director Anton Corbijn (The American, Control), adapted from a novel by spy John le Carré. Hoffman plays the spy chief of Hamburg, charged with figuring out what’s up with a mysterious, tortured and near-dead half-Chechen, half-Russian man who shows up in the city.
[The] man on the run arrives in the city’s Islamic community desperate for help and looking to recover his late Russian father’s ill-gotten fortune. Nothing about this young man seems to add up; is he a victim or a thief or, worse still, an extremist intent on destruction? [ComingSoon]
Best of all, everyone gets to German accents! Because how else would you know they’re in a foreign country?
The last movie based on a John Le Carré novel I saw was Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which was like two and a half hours of British men solemnly smoking pipes and me not knowing what was going on. I’m hoping this one’s a little less subtle, so dummies like me can appreciate it. Like maybe at one point The Rock bursts through the wall in a hummer and shines a spotlight on Rachel McAdams’ butt for some reason.
I also appreciate that the guy with the umlaut in his name is the only one not playing a German.
