Jared Hess has been searching for that proper successor to Napoleon Dynamite since 2004, and thus far it hasn’t quite panned out. He hasn’t directed a film since 2009’s Gentleman Broncos, but actually made two this year. Don Verdean, co-written by his wife, Jerusha (which I saw at Sundance), and Masterminds, written by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, and Emily Spivy, starring Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, and Owen Wilson as a trio of armored car robbers, with Jason Sudeikis as a hitman. Like you’ve never seen them before, because they’re wearing some outrageous hair and clothes.
It opens with Zach Galifianakis screaming into the camera and only gets more over-the-top from there. Silly costumes and hair for everyone! Then there’s an AC/DC song, and MORE silly costumes and hair! I mean I don’t want to gild the lily here but this movie looks sure to be a real treat for lovers of humorous hair and clothes. It sort of looks like the pitch was “Like the Simpsons, if every character was Homer!”
I still laughed at the car crash and cat’s eye contacts though, so who knows. Opens August 19th.
