It’s been almost half a year since we last posted about the possibility of Tyrese Gibson taking on the role of John Stewart in a new Green Lantern movie. And Gibson has been fanning the rumor flames these past months by pretty much campaigning for the role himself on social media.
According to a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, these rumors may soon be accompanied by an official announcement that Gibson may — or may not — be a part of:
“There are certain things I can’t speak on, but I will say, however this works out, it’s definitely the fans’ fault. I was at home minding my own business and fans start creating these fan-made videos of me as Green Lantern and I looked into it. I’ve been a fan of the Green Lantern, I took the oath, and I had a meeting at Warner Bros. and certain things were said and talked about. We’ll just see what happens.”
During the interview, Gibson took a moment to pitch himself for the role by saying, “Listen, these muscles are here and they’re ready to be used, there are lot of people, domestically and internationally, who’s got love with your boy.” That’s not an understatement either. Since the outstanding global success of Furious 7, “your boy” has definitely received an actor status upgrade.
While Marvel, Sony and Paramount Studios are all skipping this year’s Comic-Con, Warner Bros. will definitely be in attendance and rumor has it a new Green Lantern Corps movie will be announced with Chris Pine and Tyrese Gibson attached. Again, this is just a rumor at the moment, but we have two weeks until we know for certain what WB’s plans are.
With Marvel’s absence at Hall H, it looks like this will be the absolute best time for DC Comics to drop some comic-book movie bombshells on the masses. Gibson, of course, recognized the magnitude of the event by coyly saying:
“You never know, I might be there on the other side of an announcement. You never know.”
We’ll know soon enough.
