Frank Marshall is a name you likely know if you pay attention to the credits of Steven Spielberg movies. Currently, he’s the guy in charge of making a new Indiana Jones movie happen, and he’s had a few things to say about where the franchise is going.
First, he reaffirms that only Harrison Ford will be Indiana Jones, something Disney and Spielberg both are bearing down rather hard on, something that applies to the Bourne movies he produces, as well:
…we are not going to do the Bond thing. We think those characters are iconic, and those are the only actors who can play that.
He also noted that Indiana Jones V, which doesn’t currently have a subtitle, will be continuing from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which, considering Ford’s age, is something of a necessity. Beyond that, he wasn’t too forthcoming with plot details, but we would imagine Indy’s detour into ’50s sci-fi pulp is going to be quietly put aside in favor of his finding another idol and bonding with whichever young actor they’ve cast as Henry Jones III to keep the franchise going.
Harrison Ford will always be Junior, but notice they didn’t say anything about recasting Mutt or having a younger actor take over the heavy action lifting. You don’t shove a Marvel movie off its release date unless you’ve got plans for more than just one movie, so expect Disney to have a lot more about Indy’s next adventure shortly.
