Suicide Squad has gone from cult comic book at DC Comics to mainstream phenomenon, right down to the inevitable Hot Topic collection. But of course, the question still remains just how the bad guys are going to do at the box office. And the answer, so far, is “very, very well.”
Early box office tracking for the movie’s opening, which happens August 5th, shows it cleaning a surprising amount of house at the moment. Currently predictions are sitting at $125 million, which would handily beat the current record holder for largest August opening, which just so happens to be Guardians Of The Galaxy with $94 million. Will Smith, who’s still easily one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, definitely helps matters there.
But can it beat Deadpool? So far, the Merc with the Mouth is the only superhero who truly matters at the box office, shattering most of Hollywood’s convention wisdom with a $132 million opening and nearly $800 million across the world. It’s certainly within striking distance, and Smith’s star power paired with the PG-13 rating might help, but it’ll be a tough bid to top DP.
Still, there’s only one way to truly find out, and that’s for the movie to hit the box office. We’ll see what Harley’s packing behind that mallet August 5th.
