Has Lil Wayne finally managed to find a way to extricate himself from the clutches of Birdman and Cash Money Records? If you believe what he said during a recent concert at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania, then maybe he has. Weezy was in the middle of giving a performance to the college crowd when he paused to ask, “Is it cool if I just say it?” Then revealed, “It’s the Roc. You know I’m a member of that team now.” The crowd cheered and he threw up the iconic diamond hand sign.
I know what some of you may be thinking? Hasn’t Lil Wayne claimed to have signed with Roc Nation in the past only for it to turn out to be a big nothing. Why, yes, you are correct. The earliest known moment that Wayne publicly aligned himself to Jay Z’s label was back around 2005 when he told another crowd that he had left Cash Money for Def Jam Records.
Fast forward to two years ago, and Wayne was at the KMEL Summer Jam where he said, “I just signed a deal with my mother**king idol Jay Z.” Fans went wild speculating about his realignment with Roc Nation, but Wane was simply referring to a deal with Hov’s streaming service Tidal.

Then last year, he fueled speculation once again that he’d aligned with the Jiggaman when he declared “I’m a motherf**kin’ Roc-a-Fella millionaire,” during a Camp Flog Gnaw performance. So while it would be great for Weezy to bolt from Cash Money and realign under the Roc, until there’s papers signed and they are made public, it’s best to remain a little skeptical about his in-concert pronouncements.
