Movie Power Rankings: ‘Gravity’ floats past ‘Avengers 2’ and ‘Ant-Man’

Rave reviews and a smart, scary-good marketing campaign have propelled “Gravity” to a cosmic $55.5 million opening weekend. It’s not only a record for the month of October, but also the biggest opening for both George   Clooney and Sandra Bullock. Early Oscar buzz has the space drama (or is that “sci-fi drama”?) at the front of the awards pack, but will it maintain its momentum, or drift off into the ether?

As for the rest of this week’s list…

October 9, 2013

1. “Gravity” (Last week: Not ranked)
How many times have you seen it? Is it one of your Oscar picks?

2. “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” (Last week: No. 2)
Sgt. Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) himself has confirmed the sequel’s addition of Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch.

3.” Ant-Man” (Last week: Not ranked)
No casting news yet, but director Edgar Wright tweeted a little pic just to remind fans that Marvel’s still working on it. Who would you like to see play Hank Pym?

4. “Ted 2” (Last week: Not ranked)
Universal must be pretty confident about Seth MacFarlane’s sequel. It’s been moved up to June, 2015, where it will compete for box office glory with “Jurassic Park VI,” “Despicable Me: Minions,” and even and “Superman Vs. Batman.”

5. “Fantastic Four” (Last week: Not ranked)
What franchise isn’t being written by this Simon Kinberg guy? He penned “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” will help out with “Star Wars” and is now hard at work on this reboot, being directed by Josh Track (“Chronicle”). Is “Star Trek” next?

6. “Cruella” (Last week: Not ranked)
After “Maleficent,” Disney will give the “101 Dalmatians” villainess the spotlight in this live-action film. Who’s next? The guy from “Mulan”?

7. “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair” (Last week: Not ranked)
After some time in purgatory, the franchise is returning to the big screen, with a new production team in tow.

8. “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” (Last week: Not ranked)
With this new trailer, we finally get a look at the latest film based on the writings of the late Tom Clancy. Can Chris Pine do the character justice?

9. “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” (Last week: Not ranked)
Action and romance abound in the newest trailer for the middle part of the prequel trilogy. We still miss Viggo Mortensen though.

10. “Machete Kills” (Last week: Not ranked)
Singer-turned-actress Lady Gaga’s new tune “Aura” powers the latest trailer for Robert Rodriguez’s sequel.
