The DeLorean time machine as couture clothing: That”s the design that won artist and “Back to the Future” fan Amy Beth Christenson the top prize at a fashion show at Comic-Con last year.
The design, called “Great Skirt, Marty!”, is packed with fun details “Back to the Future” fans will appreciate, from the clutch that features the DeLorean”s futuristic barcode license plate to a cuff bracelet sporting the logo for Mr. Fusion. Christenson also made a lit-up, wearable version of the time circuits using an iPhone and an iPhone case she made using a 3D printer.
Christenson created the design for the Her Universe Fashion Show at San Diego Comic-Con last summer. A contest for both amateur and professional designers, the fashion show was hosted by women”s sci-fi apparel company Her Universe and by Hot Topic. Over 160 designs were submitted for the fashion show, and Christenson was among 36 finalists.
“I knew I really wanted to do a ‘Back to the Future” outfit “cause it was huge for me growing up. It made a big impact on me and what I wanted to do growing up,” Christenson told HitFix. She now is a senior concept designer and visual development artist for Lucasfilm Animation, currently working on “Star Wars Rebels.”
As the judge-selected winner of the fashion show, Christenson, along with the fan-voted winner, were awarded the opportunity to design a fashion collection with Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein for Hot Topic. The result was the Marvel by Her Universe “Avengers” collection, which hit stores this May.
The Her Universe Fashion Show will gather fans around a geektastic runway again this Thursday when it returns for a second year at Comic-Con.
