The Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting more interesting by the day, and now we’re learning a (teeny-tiny) bit more about the next movie starring Captain America. Now that we know the subtitle is Captain America: Civil War, there is some definite comic-based source material to refer to. But as we know, Marvel can be pretty tight-lipped when it comes to releasing information. That’s why I believe that whenever a Marvel filmmaker provides an interview, members of their family are spirited away to an undisclosed location and held in a dark room until the interview is approved and released by Kevin Feige. Maybe I’m exaggerating.
Anyway, the screenwriters of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, are coming back to write the patriotic superhero’s second sequel, and here is what they were allowed to say when they spoke with IGN:
Black Panther
Before headlining his own solo movie in 2017, Chadwick Boseman is set to make his debut as Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War. Markus and McFeely don’t go into detail about the extent of the character’s involvement (natch) except to say that Boseman was “a good get.”
Peggy Carter
Hayley Atwell gets to straddle two different time periods in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having appeared as an elderly Peggy in The Winter Soldier and her younger self in ABC’s Agent Carter. We’re also getting a better look at her relationship with Howard Stark, father of Tony (Robert Downey Jr.). Does this mean that Tony might have known Peggy growing up and still have a connection with her in the present? McFeely says:
“[T]hat question has been in and out all over the place so who knows. So many things can shake out but we’ve had conversations and we pitched scenes. Some stay and some don’t. But we saw [Peggy] in Winter Soldier, so we know she’s around.”
It’s a pretty juicy tidbit to gnaw on, especially since we know that Steve Rogers and Tony Stark — who didn’t exactly get off to a great start in The Avengers — really start to butt heads in the Civil War comics. It’s a relationship that heads down a path that could turn out to be a heartbreaking one for our Star Spangled Man With a Plan.

How the actors have influenced the original source material
Marvel’s Civil War series was written over 2006-2007, before the first movie in the MCU, Iron Man, was released. Since then, the way people view that storyline has been altered because we’ve all seen these characters brought to life by the actors who play them, who have all had their own creative input on who these characters are. To say nothing of how Joss Whedon and all the other Marvel filmmakers have molded these stories. McFeely explains:
“…[W]e need to make sure that that template gets adjusted and what have you in order to make sure it services these characters and not just sort of rip off their parts and make them look like them.”
But mostly, Chris Evans is just the best guy ever
McFeely again:
“He’s Gary Cooper for me. Him as Cap is Gary Cooper. He can do a lot with stillness and because Cap is usually right and usually held up to be right, people want to be lead by him. So, that’s one of the things I like about Chris is that he brings… Remember the parts he played before this. He was uber charming. He was hilarious. He still has that. You still like him. But it’s the fact that he’s holding that back that makes you lean in to him. It’s a different chapter for him and I’m not sure any of us said, ‘That’s the perfect guy because he was the Human Torch!’ Turns out he was the perfect guy because there’s a depth to him.”
Because, I mean, this guy. Look at the depth on this guy.
The takeaway: Markus and McFeely did such a great job on The Winter Soldier, they have a lot of story to draw inspiration from for Civil War, and they are pretty excited about it. This feels like a recipe for a great Captain America movie and we should all get ready to be surprised.
