When it came time to choose our favorite movies of 2014, Danger Guerrero and I both picked the action rampage film John Wick, because it was a truly enjoyable surprise in a genre that has been overrun by routine. Was it silly? Absolutely. But that added to the delight of watching Keanu Reeves avenge the murder of his adorable puppy, as he played the world’s greatest hitman, or the living boogeyman, doing what he does best. What made it a remarkable film, though, was how well the fight scenes were choreographed, and that’s what should happen when the two men making their directorial debut previously served as stuntmen.
In a recent interview with Movies.com, directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch didn’t play coy about the future of John Wick and the possibility of a sequel. “We’re in development right now,” Stahelski said. Well then, go ahead and color us blood red with excitement.
“We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original,” Stahelski said. “It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character. That’s always the most important. If there’s great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn’t have charisma you’re not going to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it’s Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first. Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we’ll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome.”
“You gotta go on a journey with the guy and have to like the guy,” Leitch added. (Via Movies.com)
We love the guy, so go ahead and get Reeves on board and make this thing happen. No prequel nonsense with a younger actor that kind of looks like him, please. A straight up sequel that features a ton of more action, and possibly ends with a shootout to defend a whole litter of puppies. RIP, little buddy…
