Wrestler, actor, and Wyclef Jean collaborator Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the King of Pop (Culture) right now. Last Saturday, he hosted arguably the season’s best SNL; one day later, he was palling around with Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 31. Speaking of Ronda, she has a brief, but memorable role in Furious 7, which comes out Friday and also stars The Rock as a body cast-exploding ass-kicker (the 2003 Kids’ Choice Awards was onto something).
None of those roles are exactly appropriate for kids, though, a demographic he’s largely ignored since 2012’s Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (definitely the second best franchise he rightly nabbed from Brendan Fraser). But The Rock will return to his family-friendly, Tooth Fairy roots in the upcoming Disney animated musical film Moana. Also, he’s gonna sing.
The Disney Wiki describes Moana, which will be directed by Aladdin and The Little Mermaid‘s John Musker and Ron Clements, as being set in the “ancient South Pacific world of Oceania 2,000 years ago,” where the titular teenage girl “sets sail in search of a fabled island.” The Rock will voice Maui, a “legendary demi-god.” So, he’s basically playing himself.
Now THAT’S family-friendly.
