Anne Hathaway will star in Colossal, a film about a woman moving back to her hometown while halfway across the world, a Godzilla-type monster is attacking Tokyo.
The film is being written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo, whose previous work includes Timecrimes, Open Windows, and the “Parallel Monsters” segment in V/H/S: Viral, though this is the Spanish writer-director’s biggest film so far in scope and star power:
In the movie — described as Transformers versus Adaptation and Godzilla meets Being John Malkovich; Hathaway will play Gloria, an ordinary woman who, after losing her job and her fiancé, decides to leave her life in New York to move back to her hometown.
But when news reports surface that a giant lizard is destroying the city of Tokyo, Gloria gradually comes to realize that she is strangely connected to these far-off events via the power of her mind. In order to prevent further destruction, Gloria needs to determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.
No other casting has been announced yet, but Vigalondo and Garrett Basch will serve as executive producers. Basch previously collaborated with Vigalondo on Open Windows and 2011’s Extraterrestrial. Based on the outlandish premise and Hathaway’s casting alone, Colossal is likely to attract plenty of attention. Godzilla meets Being John Malkovich? Vigalondo has my attention.
