Not only is Furious 8 already dated, but the seventh sequel in the long-running Fast and Furious franchise is already collecting talent new and old. Ludacris and Vin Diesel have been teasing fans about the next movie for months now, and Universal has expressed interest in getting Eva Mendes back into the mix. Hell, even Dame Helen Mirren wants to join the party as the franchise’s next big baddy. But what’s The Rock cooking?
More Hobbs, according to a recent press conference attended by Collider. When Dwayne Johnson was asked about whether or not his character would make an appearance in Furious 8, he answered, “Of course. It can’t go on without Hobbs.”
This being a press conference, those in attendance jumped on Johnson’s short response and asked for more details. Being that Furious 7 is still in theaters, he obviously doesn’t know that much (if anything at all) about the next film. However, a Hobbs solo film is apparently in the works. When pressed for updates, Johnson obliged:
We all are interested in it. I just had a big conversation with the studio. So we’ll see. I still think for me personally we’ve created a little bit of space for him in 7 and the gauge is set for what the audience will want. That’s my take on it, you know, but a lot of other people have to have input.
So we’re definitely getting a Furious 8, and possibly a spin-off film for the Hobbs character. Is there a franchise character named Calvin? They should make a new character and name him Calvin, then team him up with Hobbs for some vacuous reason. If there’s anything that Snakes on a Plane taught us, it’s that titles are everything.
