Let’s check in with Andrew Garfield several months after Marvel and Sony announced that he was out as Spider-Man.
The actor was at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Annual Grants Banquet, his first red carpet in a year and a half, sporting a man bun and a fuzzy mustache. There, he told Entertainment Tonight that he was relieved at having to give up the role: “I’m just really excited to just be a fan again as opposed to bearing the weight of it.”
In addition, Garfield was supportive of Tom Holland, the new Spider-Man: “He was in this movie The Impossible and he was just this incredibly powerful, sensitive, just wonderful young actor.”
Garfield also said that Holland has a dancer’s body that’s suited for such a physically agile role.
He lost the role back in February, after playing the superhero in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Things changed with Sony and Marvel made a deal allowing Spider-Man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, meaning the character will likely pop up in other popular Marvel franchises like Captain America: Civil War. A stand-alone Spider-Man movie with Holland and director Jon Watts is expected to open on July 28, 2017.
