Remember when the news broke that Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson would be starring in and producing a remake of John Carpenter’s 1986 cult classic Big Trouble in Little China?
Of course you do. Who doesn’t remember that slice of tremendously tasty news? How could the idea of seeing Jack Burton and his big rig getting sucked into a mystical, ancient Chinese brouhaha again be lost on anyone? Well Kurt Russell, who played Jack in the original, is on the promotional circuit for his new cannibal horror western Bone Tomahawk and has a few thoughts on what he remembers. When asked about the pending remake, Russell came off as a little bit circumspect.
“I guess it’s that time now,” Russell told Collider. “You know, nothing sacred, why not? I always look at these movies when I see a remake and it’s like, ‘Okay…there’s gotta be a reason.”
Russell, who teamed with Carpenter for a remake of The Thing back in 1982, isn’t exactly unfamiliar with the idea of mining the past to benefit the present. But for his part, he didn’t trash the idea of this particular rehash, saying “I hope they do it well.”
“Big Trouble is definitely a cult film,” he said. “So I don’t know what their reasons are for remaking the movie, but I hope that they have the right reasons.”
